What is Belkyra?

Belkyra is the most novel method to eliminate the undesirable jowl, without going through the operating roomIt is an injectable solution, which is administered subcutaneously to patients who want to rejuvenate their face or fill it with harmony, minimally invasive, getting rid of the fat of the jowls. It should only be injected by health professionals with adequate training, experience and knowledge of the submental anatomy, that is, a plastic or maxillofacial surgeon.

The Belkyra solution is delivered to patients in controlled doses in sessions, up to a maximum of six. Between one session and the next, at least 4 weeks must elapse. The total volume injected and the number of sessions must be adapted to the objectives of the treatment, as well as to the distribution of the submental fat of each individual patient and their expectations, and, of course, to the specialized medical criterion of the professional who prescribes and performs the treatment.

According to the case, and for the comfort of the patient during the injections, oral analgesics, cold in the area or local topical and / or injectable anesthesia can be administered. The procedure does not require hospitalization, and the patient can make life completely normal immediately after each session of Belkyra.

How does it Belkyra?

Belkyra is an injectable medicine that contains a high amount of deoxycholic acid in its composition.

Deoxycholic acid is a drug related to the destruction of certain cells (cytolytic) that when injected into localized subcutaneous fat, such as the double chin, physically alters the cell membrane of adipocytes. This attack on the fat cells causes a natural response of the organism, which produces macrophages (they are a type of white blood cells that eat the waste material of the body). The macrophages work to eliminate cellular debris and lipids, which end up being eliminated through the normal process of detoxification of the organism. In addition, after this process, there is a thickening of the fibrous walls of the area, which entails an increase in collagen.

Thus, from the second and even the sixth injection of treatment with Belkyra, an important decrease in the size of the double chin is observed, as well as an improvement in the quality of submental skin. It is not recommended to repeat the sessions more frequently than monthly.

Belkyra or jowl liposuction

We are all very familiar with the liposuction process. It is one of the interventions of plastic surgery and aesthetics most practiced in our country, and there are many people who demand this technique to eliminate the unsightly double chin.

Then, why resort to Belkyra? They are very different procedures for patients with very different needs and expectations.

In the first place, Belkyra is a treatment of aesthetic medicine that does not require hospitalization or anesthesia, nor does it imply recovery. That it is a procedure of aesthetic medicine, it is recommended to always go to a health professional with specialized training in submental anatomy, which is none other than a plastic or maxillofacial surgeon. However, liposuction is a surgical procedure that must be performed in a hospital setting, and in the presence of an anesthetist.

Considering this difference, Belkyra is indicated for patients with moderate to severe convexity and who do not want to go through an operating room to eliminate it. It is not recommended to use Belkyra in patients with excessive cutaneous laxity or prominent platysma bands.

The main differences between these two techniques, are mainly in:

The durability and immediacy of the results: with a liposuction of jowls, the results are immediate and definitive in 2 months. By the injection of Belkyra the results take between 2 and 6 months to become visible, and its effects extend approximately 5 years in time after the end of treatment.
The risks: Belkyra is a very minimally invasive treatment and the risks are not in any way comparable to those of a surgical intervention. The most frequent risk of Belkyra consists in the temporary lesion of the mandibular marginal nerve, which appears as an asymmetric smile due to the paresis of the lip depressor muscles.
